VÕLUKUNST (meaning "Art of Magic" in Estonian) is a creative brand focused on upcycling and repurposing and aimed at people who appreciate sustainability, playfulness and uniqueness. The printed artworks are created by Maria Evestus, an Estonian painter and illustrator whose work is inspired by fairy tales, dreams and times gone by.
Võlukunst's art garb is printed in small Tartu printshops on pre-owned and upcycled fabrics. Every print comes in limited edition, each model is unique. Follow us for updates and special offers on our isntagram and facebook. Our products can also be purchased via etsy."Use what you have!"
ArtworkThe print graphics are based on original paintings of Estonian popsurrealist painter Maria Evestus. At this moment we have created products based on six artworks.
First three artworks are of the Rocking Horse Triptych "Independence (Ascension, Conflict and Independence)" (2015) which depicts a symbolistic journey of rocking horses towards self-actualization and -awareness.
Following these we created our Five Little Red Riding Hoods collection based on "Five Little Red Riding Hoods 1/3" (2013), The Berry Picker collection based on a painting called "In The Green" (2017) and The Flower Picker line based on a 2018 painting by the same name.
You can see more of M. Evestus' creations on her webpage.
print GraphicsThe paintings are reimagined as silk screen printable graphic artworks by the artist herself. For printing we tend to use the four brand colours of Võlukunst: brick red, warm white, mint green and violet grey. This gamma is inspired by medieval tapestries and modern design trends creating a crisp yet warm and timeless spectrum.
finding the fabricsThe garments for printing are obtained from second hand stores and other secondary market channels. It does not necessarily mean that the clothes have been worn before, since often we find attire that is completely new with labels. It simply means that we "use what we have" by choosing the most sustainable sources for our products. Another criterion for the materials we choose is that the colours and style will match the planned print graphics.
careAll of the second-hand fabrics are washed using locally produced allergy free detergent, processed with a fabric shaver if needed and ironed or steamed.
silkscreen printingWe print our clothes locally in small independent eco-friendly print shops. Every design is printed only once in a limited set of 12-25 items. In the printing process we use professional water based fabric paints to guarantee a lasting quality.
DetailsAll of the Võlukunst art garbs are embellished with labels bearing our logo and sometimes we add hand painted (using the same fabric paints) or stitched on additions (vintage wooden beads for example) to the printed artworks.
